Younger classes often read a traffic light more easily than a bar. Switch the display to Traffic light and the same reading shows as three lamps: green while the room works, yellow as it gets loud, red once it passes your line. The line you set still decides where red starts.
It works because the class can see it. Nobody has to be told to quiet down. They watch the bar climb towards the line and settle themselves, which is a much better lesson than being shushed.
Your browser asks for microphone permission the first time. If you say no, the meter simply does not read. The percentage is a relative loudness reading for your room and your microphone, not a calibrated decibel measurement.
